Bengaluru: Aahwahan Foundation inaugurated its 307th Rainwater Harvesting System at Seegehalli Government Primary School, Krishnarajapuram, Bengaluru, in collaboration with BHN Technologies, reinforcing its commitment to addressing water scarcity in schools and promoting sustainable water management.
The newly commissioned system has a storage capacity of approximately 40,000 to 50,000 litres and is equipped with advanced filtration units, recharge pits, and supporting infrastructure. It is designed to ensure long-term water security by efficiently collecting rainwater from the school’s catchment areas, filtering it, and directing it into storage tanks and groundwater recharge pits. This dual approach supports immediate water use while also contributing to groundwater replenishment.
The initiative will provide a consistent and safe water supply for students and teachers, meeting essential daily requirements such as toilet usage, cleaning, washing areas, and overall hygiene. Reliable access to water is expected to significantly improve sanitation standards, reduce health risks, and create a more stable and supportive learning environment for children.
Speaking on the occasion, Braja Kishore Pradhan, CEO & Founder of Aahwahan Foundation, said, “This initiative is for ensuring that every student has adequate and safe water in schools. When schools have a reliable water supply, children can study without interruptions and health concerns. Water security also ensures improvements in sanitation and hygiene. Through this initiative, we are helping schools become safer places for learning while encouraging children to understand the importance of water conservation. Through this effort, the groundwater level crisis in Bangalore city will also be addressed.”
Bengaluru has been facing acute water shortages for several years, with schools among the most affected institutions. Recognising this urgent challenge, Aahwahan Foundation has undertaken the implementation of rainwater harvesting systems to ensure that no drop of rainwater goes to waste and that schools remain resilient during dry seasons. By replenishing groundwater levels, this initiative provides a vital environmental solution at a time when the city is experiencing critically low water tables. With very few NGOs actively working in this field, Aahwahan’s efforts stand out as a significant step toward sustainable water management.
Swathi R, A student of Class V, Seegehalli Government Primary School, said, “We should save water because it is very important for our life. We learned how rainwater can be saved and reused in our school, and I will tell my family and friends why saving water is important.”
Beyond infrastructure, the project serves an important educational purpose. Students at the schools not only benefit from improved water security but also receive guidance on environmental responsibility, the importance of conserving rainwater, and the technology behind rainwater harvesting. Through this initiative, children develop an early understanding of sustainability and the value of natural resources, making the program both practical and transformative.
