Mumbai: Brain Bristle, a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation, is working to transform the educational journeys of children on the autism spectrum by embedding early intervention and inclusion within low-income schools. With autism prevalence in India estimated at approximately 1 in 68, among under-10-year-olds, the organisation addresses a need for equitable, accessible, and high-quality education for neurodiverse learners.
Founded by educator, writer, and autism specialist Devangana Mishra, Brain Bristle operates on the belief that autistic children can thrive when supported through holistic, inclusive, and strengths-based education. Rather than segregating children into special institutions, the organisation trains and places social workers in government and affordable private schools, enabling autistic students to learn alongside their peers while receiving individualised support. This is done through trained social workers, who are psychology, counselling or education graduates with 4-5 hours/day at hand, to contribute to our city and its schools.
Brain Bristle’s work spans early intervention, classroom inclusion, teacher collaboration, and family engagement, alongside research, advocacy, community building, and awareness initiatives aimed at reshaping how autism is understood in India. Its direct intervention efforts are dedicated across low-income schools and communities in Mumbai, while extending its outreach, advocacy, awareness and education programmes, nationally and beyond.

At Brain Bristle, our goal is to shift the narrative for autism, to give it the full understanding and space to thrive it deserves- we do this by educating, including, supporting, and celebrating them,” Devangana Mishra, Founder of Brain Bristle. “When schools, families, and communities come together with the right mindset and tools, autistic children can not only cope but truly flourish and grow.”
At the heart of Brain Bristle’s philosophy is a shift away from limiting labels and toward recognising each child’s individuality, potential, and capacity for growth. By inculcating creativity, kindness, and educational excellence, the Foundation seeks to create real-life examples of academic, artistic, and personal success among autistic children, helping them move toward independence and meaningful participation in society.
Through its integrated school-based model and growing advocacy efforts, Brain Bristle continues to champion a more inclusive education system – one that ensures children on the autism spectrum, especially from underserved backgrounds, are not left behind but empowered to flourish.
