Biocon Foundation Provides New Classrooms to Government School

Bengaluru, November 17, 2020: Biocon Foundation, the CSR arm of Biocon Ltd, an innovation-led global biopharmaceutical company, constructed a block of five classrooms at the Government Higher Primary School at Huskur, Anekal Taluk. Present at the occasion were Devaraje Gowda, Executive Officer, Anekal Taluk Panchayat, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon Ltd.

The building was handed over by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder and Managing Trustee, Biocon Foundation to Sri Ramamurthy, Block Education Officer, Anekal Taluk in the presence of local authorities.

As the decision to reopen schools was kept in abeyance, Biocon Foundation utilised the last several months for construction classroom blocks, renovate schools and Anganwadis in locations across Karnataka.

Speaking on the occasion, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder and Managing Trustee, Biocon Foundation, said, “The new premises will facilitate safe distancing and improved hygiene. This is a time when teachers should plan the reopening with great care and train the students in safe practices. We hope that students will return enthusiastically to their newly revamped school when the situation improves.”

R. Ramamurthy, Block Education Officer, Anekal Taluk, said, “I would like to Thank Biocon Foundation for their contribution in terms of school infrastructure, WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) programme, content development and teacher training. The Department of Education looks forward to more fruitful collaborations with Biocon Foundation in the future.”

Dr Anupama Shetty, Mission Director, Biocon Foundation said, “Education has been a key focus area for Biocon Foundation since inception. With the kind permission from Anekal education authorities, we had the privilege of building a block of five classrooms in the Huskur Higher Primary School.  It is our firm belief that collaborative models of participation with the Government would ensure the sustainability of initiatives. It is our hope that with a gradual return to normalcy when schools reopen, the students of Huskur Higher Primary School, would be energized by the bright, comfortable and cheerful classrooms.”

The Government Higher Primary School caters to about 200 students from semi-urban and rural populations in Anekal Taluk.
